The great teacher Derek Prince once said, “If you want to know how much you love God, look at how you spend time with His Word.”
Casual Christianity comes to mind - something I experienced not too long ago. I had a certain indifference and recklessness in my relationship with God. If you had asked me back then whether I was spending time with God, I might have said, 'Yes, I pray every day.' But we all know that a single daily prayer often indicates that our relationship with God isn’t where He yearns for it to be.
I enjoy coffee and have a few cups a day. I love being outside, so I make sure to spend a good amount of time outdoors every day; when I can’t, I genuinely miss it. I also enjoy learning and dive into topics that stimulate and educate me—things that are useful and beneficial for both my life and my clients' lives.
The point is, what we love gets our attention. If Jesus isn't getting our attention, what is standing between us and Him? I heard someone say recently, “At the end of the day, I’m too tired to spend time with God,” yet they also mentioned spending hours binge-watching Netflix or scrolling through social media. I understand that struggle all too well - I’ve been there myself.
But I can promise you this: when you immerse yourself in God’s Word and ask Him to reveal the meaning of His scriptures to you, you wouldn’t want to stop reading and understanding.
We use words like, “I can’t go a day without God; God is so good to me; I pray every day and thank Him for my blessings; I am a Christian”- but when last did you hear God’s voice? When last did you commit whatever you do to Him so that He can establish your plans (Prov. 16:3)? When last did you pray to Him to reveal His plan for your life, His will for this very day?

A relationship with God is built on spending time in His Word, talking with Him, and listening to His voice.
Imagine if you have superficial interactions with your spouse, partner, children, team members or your boss once a day, despite living and working under the same roof - would that make for a strong relationship? Would you truly be able to know them and understand them?
God desires ongoing relationship with us. There’s so much more to a relationship with Him than just a quick prayer, reading a verse or two from the Bible every now and then or calling yourself a Christian.
God’s Word reveals many many secrets and mysteries through His Holy Spirit when we spend time with His Word. He answers prayers and show you the way through His Word. His Word has healing powers, it brings prosperity and success, it delivers us, cleanses us, guides us – it imparts life! It will speak to you, your circumstances and your worries and questions – directly.
Hebrews 4:12 says: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” NASB
God’s Word is about love – a love of a Heavenly Father who paid the ultimate ransom to save us from eternal and irreversible separation from God. There is no greater love than His.
When you want to find Him, open His Word.
When you want to know Him, open His Word.
When you want to love Him, open His Word.
When you want to understand His love for you, open His Word.
I have personally experienced the truth of these words: “If you want to know how much you love God, look at how you spend time with His Word.” This statement resonates deeply with me because I believe it is impossible to truly love God without also loving His Word.
As always, don’t take my word for it, why don’t you give it a try yourself 😉
